Jewish Life
Most Belarussian cities with a large Jewish presence have synagogues and schools. Two day schools, two pre-schools and eighteen supplementary schools operate in Belarus, serving the needs of over 1600 students in 13 cities. The Lauder Foundation also established a Jewish day school run by Chabad, and is currently building a contemporary school, together with a new Jewish community center. Recently, the Marc Chagall Jewish University was founded in Mink through a grant by the Ohr Avner Foundation and Mr. Eli Horen. The central synagogue in Minsk is led by Rabbi Yosef Gruzman, the Chief Rabbi of Belarus. In addition, there is a community center, a Jewish Peoples University, a Center for Jewish National Culture and a Lubavitch yeshiva. In addition, a Center for the Jews of Belarus operates in Vitebsk. Many cultural groups exist as well as a Jewish press that publishes several papers and journals. The Union of Jewish Communities and Organizations of Belarus is the main umbrella organization and is a full member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of the C.I.S. and holds a permanent seat on the executive committee.
